Harry Potter and its Fans

Throughout our classes, several fans have obviously appeared - Star Wars, Harry Potter, and a little bit of Doctor Who. One of the most prominent and largest fan-bases on the internet is Harry Potter. Including fanfiction, fan art, forums, websites and more, Potterheads are everywhere.

Aside from much of the remix culture already discussed in this blog, fans of Harry Potter develop theories, point out character developments, and highlight characters that are most often overlooked in the books.

Recently, I scrolled the countless pages and images of the Harry Potter fan base (really strenuous, I assure you), and it's impressive how they choose to interact with the story. From mixing and mashing romantic pairings to arguments over whether characters were truly good or bad, the Harry Potter collective always seems to be re-imagining their stories, changing the endings, and continuing their love affair with Harry Potter. Even with all of their discussions and theories, at the heart, they all seem to genuinely love the stories.

Should these types of ponderings be subjected to copyright? It's clear that JK Rowling wishes to maintain some form of control over her stories and how they're interpreted. Is it reasonable for her to try and control the narrative still? Or is it better for her to answer those nagging questions of her fans, and let their imaginations run away?
